PORT ARTHUR – After a heartbreaking loss to Navarro College, the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks return home Wednesday, Jan. 9, to try to break a two-game losing skid as they take on Kilgore College in Region XIV action.
Tipoff for tonight’s game is 7 p.m. at the Carl Parker Center on the campus of Lamar State.
CORSICANA – With the game tied and possession of the ball, Lamar State College – Port Arthur men's basketball team held its fate in its own hands … then it disappeared just as quickly. A turnover by the Seahawks with 2.1 seconds left and a buzzer-beating basket by Navarro handed the Bulldogs an 81-79 win in overtime Saturday, Jan. 5.
At the onset of the 2012-13 season, no one knew anything about the Lamar State College – Port Arthur Seahawks.
Now, the word is getting out.
The Seahawks, at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in Region XIV play, have moved into the Division I national poll, landing at 19th after this past week’s wins over Trinity Valley Community College and Panola College.
The Lamar State Seahawks completed one of the most magical and improbable runs in JUCO history this season after a 1-2 finish in the JUCO National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas last week. The Seahawks lost their first game to Monroe College out of the Bronx, 70-52, wound up beating then-#1 ranked Missouri State 69-62 in the next game before narrow 66-63 loss to Cape Fear Community College out of North Carolina.
