Legendary football coach and current defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams Wade Phillips will sign copies of his newly released book titled “Son of Bum: Lessons My Dad Taught Me About Football and Life” on Friday, May 5.

His first stop will be at 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Gulf Coast (700 Procter St.) in Port Arthur, and Phillips will sign copies in Beaumont at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble (4155 Dowlen Road).

Southeast Texas signing day 2017

Feb. 1 was a big day around the nation as athletes, mostly football and soccer, signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and play at their respective schools.

Over 80 student-athletes from Southeast Texas took part in the big day as family, friends, coaches and teammates help celebrate their accomplishment.

The Port Arthur Higher Education Foundation presented a $50,000 matching grant to the Lamar State College Port Arthur Athletics Department Jan. 27 as the second installment of a yearlong fundraising effort on behalf of the program.

SETCA Class of 2017 Hall of Fame

The Southeast Texas Coaches Association will host its annual luncheon and introduce the SETCA Class of 2017 Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Holiday Inn on Walden Road. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m., and tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.

Ozen point guard signs with Northwestern State

Ozen senior point guard Josh Boyd signed a Nation Letter of Intent to play college basketball at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Boyd (6-0, 200) averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and three steals last year, helping the Panthers make the Class 5A state championship game while finishing 33-4.

PORT ARTHUR – After a heartbreaking loss to Navarro College, the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks return home Wednesday, Jan. 9, to try to break a two-game losing skid as they take on Kilgore College in Region XIV action.

Tipoff for tonight’s game is 7 p.m. at the Carl Parker Center on the campus of Lamar State.

CORSICANA – With the game tied and possession of the ball, Lamar State College – Port Arthur men's basketball team held its fate in its own hands … then it disappeared just as quickly. A turnover by the Seahawks with 2.1 seconds left and a buzzer-beating basket by Navarro handed the Bulldogs an 81-79 win in overtime Saturday, Jan. 5.

At the onset of the 2012-13 season, no one knew anything about the Lamar State College – Port Arthur Seahawks.

Now, the word is getting out.

The Seahawks, at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in Region XIV play, have moved into the Division I national poll, landing at 19th after this past week’s wins over Trinity Valley Community College and Panola College.

Oh, what a season it was.

The Lamar State Seahawks completed one of the most magical and improbable runs in JUCO history this season after a 1-2 finish in the JUCO National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas last week. The Seahawks lost their first game to Monroe College out of the Bronx, 70-52, wound up beating then-#1 ranked Missouri State 69-62 in the next game before narrow 66-63 loss to Cape Fear Community College out of North Carolina.
