Since 1996, Sheriff Mitch Woods has been a steady hand enforcing justice for the benefit of the citizens of Jefferson County. This week he announced he would not seek re-election.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is getting a new piece of art with some great history courtesy of former Jefferson County Judge and Sheriff Carl Griffith. Thanks to a bit of luck and networking, Griffith recently acquired a rustic plaque that features the pictures of all the men who served as Jefferson County Sheriff from 1877-1947.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman issued a press release Feb. 20 to warn local residents to be wary of callers impersonating sheriff's deputies who are reportedly telling people they are calling in reference to tax returns.

According to the release, "The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is not a representative of the IRS or any other dept collector."

Deputies in Orange County are investigating a grisly discovery made Jan. 1 near Orangefield, reports the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

According to a news release from OCSO, the office received a call in reference to the discovery of human remains at about 3:30 p.m. The caller reported finding the human remains in a wooded area off F.M. 1135 near F.M. 105 in the Orangefield area of Orange County.

A Jefferson County resident was injured when his leg was impaled by a tree limb while brush hogging, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reports.
According to a news release from JCSO officers were dispatched to the 6000 block of Steinhagen Road in Labelle on Oct. 20 after receiving a call from the injured man. He advised that a tree limb had impaled his leg after being propelled by the brush-hog. Members of the Labelle/Fannett Fire/EMS and JCSO deputies responded to the scene..
