Lamar University women’s golf team

Led by medalist Wenny Chang, the Lamar University women’s golf team won an unprecedented fourth straight Southland Conference championship on April 13.

The Cardinals led from wire-to-wire, finishing eight strokes ahead of runner-up Central Arkansas with with a score of 898 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney.

It was the tightest finish since 1989, but the Lamar University men’s cross country team claimed its ninth Southland Conference Championship in 10 seasons behind the individual winner, freshman Iliass Aouani, who marked in at 24:24.6 on Oct. 30 at the Country Campus Golf Course at Sam Houston State.

Lamar University sophomore Alexus Aviles was named the Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts against UTEP and New Mexico State over the Labor Day weekend.

Lady Cardinal golf team

The Lamar Lady Cardinals golf team fired a three-round score of 892 to win the 2015 Southland Conference title and earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Lamar University began the final round of the Southland Conference Tournament four strokes behind leader Central Arkansas, but the Lady Cardinals roared back April 17 in blustery conditions to earn their first league title in women’s golf since 2006 at Frisco Lakes Golf Club with a 54-hole score of 27-over 891, which was seven strokes better than Oral Roberts and Sam Houston State, who both tied for second.
