Lamar University is seeking developers for open parcels of land the university owns surrounding campus. The university hopes the completion of major campus projects will attract new retail businesses to Lamar’s backyard.

Police in Beaumont are investigating and searching for suspects in a fatal shooting that occurred in the 4600 block of Maddox Street in Beaumont on June 2, Beaumont Police Department Officer Tony Harding reported in a news release. 

According to Harding, BPD patrol officers responded to Maddox Street in South Park in reference to call reporting a suspicious vehicle early Thursday morning, just before 1:00 a.m. While officers were en route to the location, the complainant reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Beaumont motorists might have to take a detour if they are driving through the South Park area in the next couple of months. A portion of Lavaca is closed for construction related to the city’s South Park Drainage Improvement Project.

Concern for the citizens of the South Park community and neighboring areas led to the creation of the Greater South Park Neighborhoods Partnership earlier this year.

The group, which meets monthly on the Lamar University campus, has begun to address issues facing the community, according to Norman Bellard, assistant to the president for community relations at Lamar University and chair of the partnership.

South Park residents in Beaumont are in for some much-needed drainage relief, but not before the city tears up streets and wastewater/drainage infrastructure throughout the neighborhood in a project that could take two years to complete.

At their weekly meeting, City Council members approved the final bid for the South Park drainage project, awarding the project to Allco LLC of Beaumont for some $13 million.
