Sharon Rigsby, Beaumont ISD planetarium teacher at the Murry J. Frank Planetarium, has found herself once again on the district’s Reduction in Force (RIF) list.

The original RIF list, containing more than 100 teaching positions, including Risby’s, failed to garner enough support to pass at a Monday, June 30, Board of Trustees meeting.

While the Beaumont Independent School District administration claims they are speaking on behalf of the students of the school district, the students spoke up for themselves at a budget meeting Monday, June 9.

In a letter to all Beaumont Independent School District staff, Superintendent Timothy Chargois said the district now anticipates that all employees affected by the coming reduction in force will be notified no later than June 30, rather than the June 12 date given previously.

The Beaumont ISD trustees added a new CFO, Willie “Ann” Westbrooks, to the staff to replace two former finance officials currently facing federal prosecution for embezzling more than $4 million from the district’s coffers over a three-year period.

Fifteen community members have been selected to serve on the newly formed Beaumont Independent School District Special Accreditation Committee, although not all of those named have yet decided whether to participate in any endeavor solicited in the name of the current school district leadership.
