Five members of the Lamar University women’s tennis team have been named 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes, announced ITA officials. The Cardinals named to the list are freshman Jasmin Buchta, senior Katya Lapayeva, junior Stephanie Marchena, senior Talisa Merchiers and senior Anna Spengler.

For the third consecutive season, Lamar University senior Michael Feucht has been named the Southland Conference Tennis Male Student-Athlete of the Year, while senior Katya Lapayeva earned the Southland Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

Feucht highlights a 2017 Academic All-Southland Conference team that features four Cardinals, including three first-team selections.

For the second consecutive season, the Lamar men’s tennis team is heading to the first round of the NCAA Championship after winning the Southland Conference Tournament.

Lamar (17-7) will travel to Waco on Friday, May 12, to play No. 7 seed Baylor (21-7) in the opening round at 1 p.m. at Hurd Tennis Center.

The LCM Bear Varsity Tennis team competed at the Ms. Sheila Invitational Tournament held at Lamar University on Friday, March 31, LCM CISD Community Relations Specialist Sherry Combs said in a release. Coach Cory Parsons announced the tennis results.

April 11 was a big day for the Lamar University baseball team. First, Collegiate Baseball announced that for the first time since 2009, the Cardinals were nationally ranked. And then, the Southland Conference publicized that Will Hibbs was selected as its UniversalCoin.com Pitcher of the Week.

It was a storyline that Lamar University fans have seen numerous times throughout the season – early double-digit deficits and a late surge that comes up just short in the end. That script was followed, down to the very last detail Feb. 29, to an even more heartbreaking end than in any of the previous contests, if that’s even possible.

On April 26, the Community Christian School’s High School doubles tennis team, comprised of seniors Matthew McAfee and Brett Foster, won the TAPPS State Championship for the fourth year in a row, ending the boys’ senior year with a bang!  The State Championship was held at the Waco Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The boys beat Southcrest from Lubbock with scores of 6-2, 6-1 and Lifestyle Christian from Conroe with a scores of 6-4, 6-2.
