This southern stingray is one you definitely don’t want to step on.

Wade fishermen along the Texas coast know full well that stingrays are abundant just about anywhere you can find a salty tide. It’s not unusual to see them while wading the bays during the warm water months from about May through November. And that’s why stingray-proof wading boots and shin guards are so popular. If you get hit by the poison barb of a ray’s tail, you are toast for a least a few days, and done fishing for at least a couple of weeks.

Up 2-0 at the break, all Lamar University volleyball needed was one more set win to lock a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament, but Incarnate Word flipped the script at the intermission to down the hometown Cardinals 3-2 (25-21, 37-35, 20-25, 23-25, 11-15) at McDonald Gym on Nov. 19.

Lamar coach Jim Gilligan

The Lamar baseball Cardinals had all the momentum in the world heading into the Southland Conference Tournament last week in Sugar Land with a 33-19 record, yet the Cards faltered and were eliminated in two games, losing to Central Arkansas 3-0 and Stephen F. Austin 5-2.

Lamar had swept SFA in a three-game series the week before the tournament, outscoring the Lumberjacks 35-15.

The tournament elimination marked the end of a historic career for Lamar coach Jim Gilligan.

It was a state basketball tournament filled with plenty of emotion — some good, some not so good. Two teams, Silsbee and East Chambers, eased past their respective UIL state tournament semifinal games, but neither was able to win a title.

Guard Chastadie Barrs was named the Defensive Player of the Year

Lamar University women’s basketball coach Robin Harmony knew that this year’s freshman class was something special. The rest of the Southland Conference knows it, as well, as evidenced by the hardware collected by a pair of LU’s fantastic frosh.

The Lamar State dream season was bounced back into reality Tuesday evening and its championship aspirations were dashed after the Seahawks offense was held in check virtually all night in a 70-52 loss to the Monroe Mustangs.
