Fishing on Sabine and Calcasieu lakes is gradually improving, even with water temperatures holding at a sizzling 89 degrees. Both of these “hot” fishing locations are producing fair numbers of trout and reds, along with one of the weirdest fish on earth – tripletails.

The fantastic trophy trout fishing that was being kept very quiet on Sabine Lake came to a sudden halt about a week ago when we got a tidal wave of rain and runoff. All that rain water coming down the Sabine River put the skids to a “hot” trout bite, and definitely didn’t do white bass fishermen any favors, either.

The duck season in Southeast Texas is closed in both zones, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out and do something ducky like brush up a blind, patch up the decoys, and maybe find out where new ducks are falling in and build a back-up blind.

The water temperature on Sabine Lake this past Tuesday was 63 degrees and about the same on Lake Calcasieu, two of the hottest trout fishing spots on the entire Gulf coast right about now.
