Veterans and supporters gathered at a variety of events celebrating service men and women in Southeast Texas on Nov. 11, and U.S. Congressman Brian Babin, 36th District, attended an event in Orange County honoring both veterans and law enforcement officers.

Southeast Texans have a long-standing history of supporting service men and women, and numerous groups around the area are preparing to celebrate those brave individuals in honor of Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The Orange County Commissioners Court is encouraging local residents to “Greenlight A Vet” in honor of Veterans Day by displaying green lights at their homes and businesses through Nov. 11 in a show of support for those brave men and women who have served to defend this nation and the American way of life.

Each day, 22 veterans commit suicide, or nearly one per hour. Brady Mazzola is trying to prevent that from happening but needs help.

The Orange native and former Lamar tennis player is hosting the first event of its kind on Veterans Day – Friday, Nov. 11 – at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center at 6455 College beginning at 7 p.m.

Southeast Texans celebrated our nation’s protectors during Veterans Day ceremonies across the area on Nov. 11. Community members and leaders joined veterans and their loved ones throughout the Golden Triangle to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Staff of the Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitors Center invites veterans, their families and the general public to join them and the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 292 to commemorate Veterans Day and to celebrate the service men and women who keep America safe at their seventh annual Veterans Day Observance scheduled for Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., at 5055 Interstate 10 Access Road in Beaumont. 

Vietnam Veterans Chapter 292 is hosting the event and will hold a raffle, the proceeds of which will benefit the chapter.

Three Southeast Texas vets are being honored with the Knight medal of the French Legion of Honour, France’s highest decoration awarded for excellent civil or military conduct: Beaumont resident Arlie Ray Horn, 90; Beaumont resident and retired Jefferson County 136th District Court Judge Jack R. King, 91; and 94-year-old Vidor resident Robert L. Jackson.

As some Southeast Texans prepare to enjoy a three-day weekend with Veterans Day coming up on Monday, it is important to remember what we are celebrating Nov. 11. It is a time to honor our armed forces veterans and recognize their sacrifice and service, which allows us to enjoy our many freedoms provided under the United States Constitution.

Health care has been in the news and on the minds of Americans lately with the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” taking center stage in the political theater. While civilians wonder how the act will affect them and whether the changes might be positive or negative, veterans already struggle with health care issues of their own.
