July 27, 2015, the Boy Scouts of America announced that its National Executive Board had voted to end its ban on openly gay troop leaders.

Chartered organizations will continue to select their adult leaders, however, and religious chartered organizations may continue to use religious beliefs as criteria for selecting adult leaders, including matters of sexuality, Boy Scouts of America said in a press release.


Nov. 1, Texas voters passed Proposition 1, the amendment authorizing annual disbursements from the state’s oil and gas production tax collections to the State Highway Fund — an estimated $1.7 billion in the first year alone. In Jefferson County, the proposition passed with 84 percent for and 15 percent against.


Former Beaumont City Councilwoman Bobbie J. Patterson is now spearheading a drive she calls “Operation One Vote,” which is an outreach mission encouraging citizens to register to vote and to actually go to the polls and cast a ballot in coming elections.

In conjunction with a host of other entities, the group is sponsoring a “Meet-the-Candidates Forum & Voter Registration Drive,” which is scheduled for Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Hall located at 3390 Sarah Street in Beaumont.
