A 66-year-old Beaumont man was arrested in connection to the Sept. 14 homicide of a 74-year-old woman on French Road, according to a statement by the Beaumont Police Department (BPD).

BPD reported that officers responded at 10:43 a.m. to 3030 French Road in reference to a deceased Beaumont resident, 74-year-old Peggie Ann Pier. The cause of death was not immediately known and an autopsy was ordered. In the following days, the medical examiner’s office alerted investigators that Pier apparently died by unlawful means and her death was ruled as a homicide.

Investigators, officers and the Jefferson County Crime Lab responded to 3030 French Rd. and executed an evidentiary search warrant early Sept. 19. Information and surveillance video collected implicated Leonard Paul Thompson, 66, of Beaumont, as a suspect, BPD determined.

A second evidentiary search warrant was executed at Thompson’s apartment, with the assistance of on-duty SWAT personnel. Thompson was arrested for unrelated city warrants and several evidentiary items were recovered from the apartment, BPD advised. After completing the interview with Thompson, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for murder and bond for Thompson was set at $800,000 by Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr.

Thompson was charged and booked in at Jefferson County Correctional Facility.
