Nov. 14, a Galveston County man was arrested in the Easter morning shooting death of a man that took place during a packed trail ride at the Lady Arena in Cheek.

According to information from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), deputies arrested John Joseph “JJ” Gutierrez at his home in Hitchcock. He’s charged for the murder of 30-year-old Javoris Potier.

JCSO reported that murder occurred at approximately 1 a.m. April 9 at the arena located at 7400 Boyt Rd. A twoday trail ride and Zydeco concert called “The I-10 Super ride” was being hosted with hundreds in attendance.

After numerous 911 calls, JCSO deputies arrived and discovered two gunshot victims, both victims of unrelated shooting located in different areas of the property. One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was treated and released from a local hospital. Potier sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was transported to a local hospital where he died.

According to JCSO, over the course of the investigation, it was revealed Potier was shot while attempting to help stop a fight between a group of women from Galveston County.

Gutierrez’s murder arrest warrant was signed by Jefferson County Pct. 1 Place 2 Justice of the Peace Ben Collins, who set bond at $1 million.

JCSO officials stated the investigation leading to the arrest was a collaborative effort of law enforcement officers with the Texas City Police Department, La Marque Police Department, Hitchcock Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Pearland Police Department, League City Police Department, Webster Police Department, Deer Park Police Department and Dickinson Police Department.
