Student arrested for school violence threats

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office reported a high school student was arrested after making threats against the school.

Julian Alejandro Garcia, 17, allegedly made comments while he was in Deweyville High School at about 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28., according to a news release from Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Robert Burby, the suspect was charged with terroristic threat causing fear of imminent serious bodily injury. He was arraigned and taken to the Newton County Jail under a $4,000 bond.

“Parents and educators alike must treat school threats with utmost seriousness,” wrote LaJuan Addison, DISD superintendent, in a news release. “In recent years, there has been a disturbing trend of individuals making threats against schools, causing panic and disruption.”

The case remains under investigation.
