Big Thicket National Preserve’s 49th anniversary gets underway this weekend – come for the solar eclipse, stay to celebrate the anniversary. Watch a partial solar eclipse on the lawn outside the Big Thicket Visitor Center. See the eclipse up-close through a special solar telescope, or borrow a pair of eclipse glasses and see it in the sky. Join a ranger talk to learn more about solar eclipses. The approximate eclipse time begins at 10:28 a.m. with a maximum coverage at 11:59 a.m. and ends at 1:38 p.m. Located at 6102 FM 420 in Kountze, Texas, the preserve consists of nine land units and six water corridors encompassing more than 113,000 acres. Hiking trails and waterways meander through different ecosystems, from longleaf pine forests to cypress-lined bayous. It is a place of discovery, a place to wander and explore, a place to marvel at the richness of nature along with a variety of wildlife. Saturday, Oct. 14, 10:28 a.m. Big Thicket. Free
