Body

In response to the continued lack of rainfall and excessive temperatures, the city of Beaumont has issued mandatory water restrictions according to Stage 3 of the city’s drought contingency plan.

Limited-use activities include irrigation of landscaped areas to hand-held hoses, buckets, drip irrigation or permanently installed automatic sprinklers, washing vehicles, and filling, refilling or adding water to swimming pools. Limited-use activities are permitted on Sundays and Thursdays for customers with street addresses ending in even numbers and on Saturdays and Wednesdays for those ending in odd numbers, after 8 p.m. and before 10 a.m.

The following non-essential uses are prohibited:

• Hose-end sprinklers

• Wash down of sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots, tennis courts or hard-surfaced areas

• Use of water to wash down buildings or structures for purposes other than immediate fire protection

• Use of water for dust control

• Flushing gutters or permitting water to run or accumulate in any gutter or street

• Failure to repair a controllable leak within a reasonable period after having been given notice directing the repair of such leaks

• Operation of any ornamental fountain or pond for aesthetic or scenic purposes except when necessary to support aquatic life or where such fountains or ponds are equipped with a recirculation system

• All restaurants are prohibited from serving water to patrons except upon request of the patron

According to Beaumont Parks and Recreation Department, all 10 splash pads will remain turned off throughout the city, as the water is not reusable; however, public pools will remain open according to their usual schedule.

Additionally, the city will reduce or discontinue the flushing of water mains, fire hydrant flushing, and irrigation of public landscaping in an effort to reduce its water consumption.

According to Article 22.03.b of the drought contingency plan, any person found violating the plan is guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be published by a fine of not less than $250 and not more than $2,000. Each day that one or more of the provisions is violated shall constitute a separate offense, and should a person be convicted of three or more distinct violations, the city manager will be authorized to discontinue water service to the premises where such violations occur. Subsequently, discontinued services are subject to a $75 reconnection fee in addition to any other costs incurred by the city in discontinuing the service.

Conservation efforts will be reduced to level 2 restrictions once levels have been rescinded for a period of three consecutive days. According to the National Weather Service, an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms will be present Sunday afternoon, and are expected to carry over into next week.
