The city of Port Arthur and Port Arthur Transit (PAT) announced a recent award of $5 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to boost sustainable transportation initiatives.

The funding will be use to acquire additional electric buses and charging equipment for PAT to move towards a cleaner and greener future, according to information released from the office of Mayor Thurman Bill Bartie.

Bartie noted that, with the grant, PAT aims to expand its service area by introducing a new bus line and transitioning most of its bus fleet to predominantly electric buses on routes. Additionally, PAT will introduce a new Mid-County route to enhance city residents’ transportation access.

According to Bartie, the USDOT grant showcases the federal government’s commitment to supporting sustainable transportation initiatives that prioritizes the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and create a more environmentally friendly future.
