Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reported that state sales tax revenue totaled $3.92 billion in June, 6.8% more than in June 2022. The majority of June sales tax revenue is based on sales made in May and remitted to the agency in June.

“The overall rate of sales tax revenue growth was in line with the rate of growth over the last three months,” Hegar said. “Growth in receipts from sectors principally driven by business spending continued to outpace that from consumer-oriented retail trade.

In Jefferson County, six of the eight entities saw a drop in allocations compared to June 2022. Port Neches reported a 28.64% drop in payment from $277,974 to $198,360.

Beaumont’s allocation dropped 2.32% from $3.679 million to $3.593 million and Port Arthur’s allocation increased 3.29% from $1.625 million to $1.678 million.

On year-to-day (YTD) allocations compared to 2022, Groves is up 8.71% from $1.278 million to $1.390 million. Port Neches had a 5.95% increase from $1.289 million to $1.365 million. Beaumont dropped 3.32% from $26.255 million to $25.382 million.

Five of the seven Orange County entities showed a drop in allocations from 2022. Hub city Orange was up 6.18% from $705,963 to $749,647 and West Orange’s allocation increased 4.88% from $110,724 to $116,133. YTD allocations compared to 2022 reported Orange increased 14.70% from $3.909 million to $4.484 million.

Rose City had the largest percentage decline of 28.15% from $18,840 to $13,535.

In Hardin County, Lumberton reported a slight increase of 1.53% in allocation compared to 2020, from $390,232 to $396,229.

Sour Lake’s allocation dropped by 19.82% from $99,468 to $79,750 and Silsbee's numbers declined by 11.28% from $282,326 to $250,474. Still, Sour Lake’s YTP payments were up 10.99% from $577,952 to $641,500, while Kountze dropped 8.24% from $428,728 to $393,415.

Total sales tax revenue for the three months ending in June 2023 was up 5.9% compared with the same period a year ago. Sales tax is the largest source of state funding for the state budget, accounting for 56% of all tax collections.

Texas collected the following revenue from other major taxes:

• Motor vehicle sales and rental taxes — $597 million, up 2% from June 2022; • Motor fuel taxes — $324 million, up less than 1% from June 2022;

• Oil production tax — $456 million, down 33% from June 2022; • Natural gas production tax — $184 million, down 58% from June 2022;

• Hotel occupancy tax — $71 million, up 6% from June 2022; and

• Alcoholic beverage taxes — $156 million, up 4% from June 2022.
