A month of fun with nature and reading was celebrated June 20 at the Kountze Public Library. Village Creek’s Alex Stamatis, along with Texas Parks and Wildlife staffers, shared “Skins and Skulls” Katie Pace, Hardin County’s Texas AgriLife agent, helped children explore animal tracks. Molly Harris read a nature story, and the Champion readers for the week were announced in Bowen Smith and LJ Ferguson.

Readers recorded books and minutes read throughout June and, on June 27, all 95 participants became eligible and were presented a certificate, medal, free book and Kona Ice snow cone.

A final celebration, the Big Thicket Art, History and Literacy Social, is at the Kirby Hill House Museum from 1-4 p.m. Friday, July 14. Representatives from local environmental groups will be on-hand to share information on citizen science and tips on how to get involved in Big Thicket preservation. The public is invited to the free event.
