Beaumont residents may receive mail-in ballot applications from mayoral candidates ahead of June’s runoff election, and officials agree these mailers are acceptable, legal applications.

“We do have candidates that have done that in the past – that have sent applications to registered voters,” said City Clerk Tina Broussard. “I’ve had very few candidates to do so, but one in 2019 did send out a slew of applications to registered voters over the age of 65 to vote.”

At least two residents called Interim County Clerk Teresa Goodness May 20 after receiving in the mail applications for mail-in ballots from Beaumont mayoral candidate Robin Mouton. Goodness told The Examiner these applications would be accepted by her office as mail-in ballot requests, taking it a step further to say they even accept hand-written notes as applications – as long as the requisite information is provided. That information includes name, date of birth, address and reason for needing a mail-in ballot.

Broussard said candidates and campaigns have in past elections sent postcards and other mailed applications to residents, should they decide to mail in their votes.

“And they can get that information from the voter registrar’s office; it’s public information,” Broussard said.

According to Goodness, those who wish to vote by mail-in ballot in Beaumont’s June 19 mayoral runoff must send in an application by June 8. Applicants can address their mail to Theresa Goodness, County Clerk, Jefferson County P.O. Box 1151, 77704.
