For the fifth consecutive year, Beaumont Animal Care (BAC) will be “Clearing the Shelter” in partnership with NBC-owned TV stations and the Telemundo Station Group.

Tuesday, Aug. 1, animal shelters across the U.S. and Puerto Rico will take part in the “Clear the Shelters” initiative, which features low-cost and waived adoption fees for August, according to BAC.

BAC adoption and marketing coordinator Viviana Lopez reports the shelter has seen great success in the past years and is looking forward to the fifth year being just as successful.

As of July 24, dozens of animals were in the custody of BAC, available for adoption, foster or rescue. Several are on “urgent” status, and “needs out of the shelter by Aug. 3 at 5 p.m.,” BAC reported. Among the animals needing immediate home is Archer, BAC #53291, an adult male that was picked up on July 20 by an animal care officer from the 100 block of Smelker. “He is very skittish here at the shelter,” BAC staff advised in announcing Archer’s need for a home – stat. “We have been unable to pair him due to his high stress.”

Archer is approximately 1 – 2 years old, and weighs roughly 25 pounds. BAC staff is uncertain of Archer’s temperament with animals already in the home, and recommends allowing Archer to meet any prospective new furry family members before adoption.

Balboa, BAC #53281, is an adult male that was picked up on July 19 by an animal care officer from the 6600 block of Broadoak. Like Archer, BAC reports that Balboa is also skittish while at the shelter, and has been unsuccessful in pairing with a family due to his highstress tendencies.

“If you have a pet at home, we would recommend doing a meet-and-greet with Balboa before adopting,” as well.

Balboa is approximately 4 – 5 years old and 67 pounds.

As of July 19, BAC’s headcount was “way over our maximum capacity,” staff reported. According to BAC, the shelter’s maximum capacity is 96 dogs. As of July 19, BAC was housing 119 dogs.

“We receive between 5 to 25 animals daily and are in desperate need of space,” BAC announced in advance of the August adoption event. “Being a municipality, we are unable to close our intake when we are full.

“We are always reaching out to rescues, but they are also full with so many other pets. So we need our community’s help. Adopter and fosters are needed now!”

Dogs aren’t the only animals at BAC waiting to go to a home of their own. In addition to dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, the city’s animal shelter also takes in assorted other possible pets.

“San Carlos” is an adult rooster that was picked up on July 19 by an animal care officer from the 8100 BLK of San Carlos.

If the roaming rooster’s original owner does not claim San Carlos, residents can apply to take him home by requesting BAC #53267.
