The Beaumont ISD ROAR reading initiative, launched as a partnership between the Beaumont community and BISD with a goal to have all BISD second graders reading at or above grade level by the end of the year, worked by pairing students with volunteers to assist in improving reading skills. With the onslaught of COVID-19, volunteers have dwindled, but the need is the same as it’s always been.

To recruit participants, a ROAR event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the HEB on College Street.

“The success of the program depends on not just the participation of BISD faculty and staff, but on the community as a whole,” BISD Director of Community and Media Relations Jackie Simien shared in an effort to spark a renewed commitment from ROAR volunteers. “Strong reading skills are the building blocks to increased student success. The district is calling on all community members to get involved in this exciting program. Through community and parental involvement, we can ensure the success of the ROAR reading initiative.”

BISD is asking for companies, community organizations, campus organizations, retirees, parents, grandparents and “anyone who would be willing to give 30 minutes (or more) of their time,” to read and help improve the reading skills of BISD students. Training will be provided to volunteers.

Students will be paired with and will read a level-appropriate book to the volunteer during their half-hour reading session. Volunteers, who have attended specific training for the program, will work with the students by asking questions that will increase comprehension and help build confidence.
