A Port Arthur man was indicted for first-degree arson by a Jefferson County Grand Jury on Nov. 8.

According to court documents, Jerome Holmes, 58, started a fire in a home, located on 13th Street, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27, 2022, after a heated argument with his wife.

His wife called 911 and reported Holmes threatened to set the house on fire. When Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD) officers arrived, they found Holmes leaving the area of the fire which started under the house.

The wife told officers that her husband stated he was going to “light the house on fire” with a pillow and placed the pillow under the home. Officers reported heavy fire damage in the front of the home.

At the time, Holmes was arrested for public intoxication and was taken to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility. He was later charged with arson, a first-degree felony. Holmes remains in the jail as of press time.
