This exhibition of original pictorial quilts, the first of its kind, explores the path of Black history in the West with a timeline beginning in 1528, marking the arrival of Africans in the American West and continuing through the Civil Rights Movement. Choosing quilts as the visual medium accentuates the intersections of African Americans in the Western Frontier while informing others about the art form and its important role in African American history. The quilts have been created by the Women of Color Quilters Network especially for “Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West.” Texas artists Carolyn Crump, Barbara McCraw and Georgia Williams will discuss their original quilts showcased in the exhibition from 2-3 p.m.
