A prisoner at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility died in a local hospital Feb. 5, two days after a suicide attempt in his cell, according to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, Joshua Allen Sees, 22, was arrested by Beaumont Police Sunday, Feb. 2 on counts of felony escape, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated robbery. Sees is allegedly one of four area residents who kidnapped and tortured a 17-year-old for hours in a Beaumont motel, Jan. 17.

Sees’ aggravated charges meant he was in a single cell, where he attempted suicide Feb. 3, the release said. He was discovered by corrections officers while making their mandated rounds. Staff immediately initiated emergency procedures and initiated CPR. They were able to resuscitate Sees and take him to a hospital, where he remained until his death Feb. 5.

Justice of the Peace Ben Collins was notified and an autopsy was ordered. Per Texas Commission on Jail Standards and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Policy, this incident is being investigated by the Texas Rangers. The victim’s family has been notified.
