Thursday, April 19, at 12:09 a.m., Beaumont police responded to Luke’s Ice House at 2325 Calder in reference to a subject burglarizing a vehicle. When officers arrived, they located the suspect in the area of Calder and Fifth Street.

Arne Almquist of Union, Kentucky, has been selected to serve as dean of the Mary and John Gray Library, announced Lamar University Provost James Marquart. Almquist’s appointment follows a national search for new leadership for the position that is at the heart of the university’s academic endeavors, Marquart said.

Applause echoed through the Vidor City Hall on April 10 as Sgt. Aleta Cappen again shattered a glass ceiling at the Vidor Police Department when she was promot - ed to captain – the first female captain on the city’s police force.

Before she was the first female captain, Cappen was the first female sergeant at the department, and before that, its first female officer in 1978.

A newborn red river hog has made his debut at the Houston Zoo. The tiny hoglet was born April 9 to first-time mother Vidalia. The red river hogs at the Houston Zoo share a habitat with two troops of western lowland gorillas in the Gorillas of the African Forest, which opened in 2015. Though gorillas and red river hogs share the same forest lands in Africa, this is truly a unique experience as you won’t see them together in a shared habitat in any other zoo.

At approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to an auto-pedestrian crash on Highway 62 in Orange County. The crash occurred near Daily Road.

Initial reports indicate that a Toyota Tundra pickup truck was traveling southbound on Highway 62. A pedestrian was walking southbound near the roadway when he was struck by the pickup truck.
