“You can put that in your f***ing paper,” alleged con woman Mary Bond said leaving the Jefferson County Courthouse following a hearing in criminal District Court on May 17, threatening to sue those covering her alleged crimes in the media. Bond, who is out on bond for multiple misdemeanor and felony allegations of theft, appeared in court with attorney Ryan Gertz on Zoom to defend his client’s bond status.

Listed as the sole defendant on a special criminal court docket titled “other,” Mary G. Bond was scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. review-of-status hearing before Jefferson County Judge John Stevens on May 17.

Listing the alleged transgressions of the accused con artist, Judge Stevens focused on two indictments from February and August of 2021, where Bond is accused of stealing a vehicle from Enterprise Rent-A-Car and securing a document by deception.

“After that indictment was handed up,” said Judge Stevens, referring to Bond’s car theft charge, not the totality of her charges – which are significantly more plentiful, “another indictment came forth from the grand jury. That was handed up on Aug. 4, (2021) which is about six months later. It alleges that on or about Feb. 7, 2020, you committed the state jail felony of securing a document by deception.”

With Bond out on bond for the February and August 2021 charges, Stevens was asked to evaluate whether Bond’s arrest earlier in May for misdemeanor theft would constitute a breach of contract for her felony bonds.

Saying the court wouldn’t take her back into custody May 17, as bailiffs did May 9, Stevens told Bond the reason why she wasn’t going to have her bond revoked. According to the judge, it was all about the timing.

The charge Bond was arrested for on May 9, Stevens explained, was filed April 19. The case was handed up by the District Attorney’s Office, Stevens said, explaining that misdemeanors don’t have to be given to a grand jury. The accusation stems from an alleged theft that occurred in August 2021, prior to Bond’s most recent felony bond release.

“There’s another misdemeanor case, which alleges that you committed an offense of stealing or receiving stolen checks,” the judge said, referring to an incident October 2020. “Going back to our cases, you were indicted Aug. 4, 2021, and Feb. 10 of 2020. So, what I’m looking for is anything that may have occurred after your indictment.”

While Bond remained mum as a mouse, the prosecution claimed to have a new felony case to level against the 37-year-old woman.

“I have a witness who would be able to testify to potentially even new felony allegations on Miss Bond, as well,” prosecutor Daniel Boyd advised the court. “We have a witness who alleged the current offense, which is the theft of the petty cash. She’s alleging that there was approximately $30,000 stolen by Miss Bond from the apartment complex.”

With a forensic audit already underway, Boyd said the case has yet to be filed, adding, “Essentially, that’s it right now.”

Although Bond’s trial date is set for June 6, Boyd said the new felony case wouldn’t be ready before then and there was therefore no need to proceed further with hearings to revoke Bond’s bonds.
