So excited for the annual Go for the Gold party and reverse drawing fundraiser Thursday, March 10, at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in downtown Beaumont. Chaired by Rocky Chase, this year’s theme is El Dorado – the mythical city of gold believed to have been in Columbia. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in gold or the fashion of ancient Columbia and enjoy a fun night with great company and comradery. Tickets are $100 and admit two people into the party with a chance to win gold - $10,000 for first, $1,500 for second and $1,000 for third. Enjoy dinner by Two Magnolias and an open bar. Doors at 6:30 p.m. See you there!

Save the date… for the 20th annual Saint Joseph’s Day Celebration on Friday, March 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica at 700 Jefferson St. in downtown. A $12 donation includes a dine-in, or to-go, lunch featuring pasta Milanese, Courville’s fried fish, artichoke and green bean casserole along with bread, dessert and tea. There will also be plenty of delicious cookies, coconut balls, cakes and more. Visit stanthonycathedral.org for more details. See you there!

Neither rain, sleet or… would keep Mardi Gras Southeast Texas revelers from the party last weekend. Last Thursday, AMSET hosted the Krewe d’AMSET street side Mardi Gras party along with nine local artists with their creative wares. Sharing their art were Mike Cacioppo, Marilyn Bell, Amy and Albert Faggard, Debbie Minyard, Mark Nesmith, Tina Novelli, Jamie Paul Kessler, Inez Alvidres and Michelle Kinnard. Two Magnolias served delicious gumbo, potato salad and dessert while the Flava Band kept the guests on their toes. On Saturday, hundreds of runners took to the streets for the NRF Capes and Crowns 5K. Congrats to Ford Phelan, who placed first in his age division. Later that evening, more than 30 festive floats made their way from the Civic Center through downtown of our fair city for the Total Krewe of Aurora Grand Parade. Thousands filled the streets as they clamored for beads. Throwing the coveted souvenirs were Marc McDonald, Maureen Croley, Vic Reyna, Melanie Dishman, Dale Wilson, Janet Todd, Charity Angelle, Max Myer, Katie Wallis, Kerry Moncla, Lynn and Greg Jackson, Lori Goats, Kylee Borden, Rita Huff, Alisha Steltz, Tammy Tinkle, Stacey and Wes Abbey, Garrison Fuller, Kristin Fuller, Cindy and Butch Frasher and Roni Stephenson, and so many others who loved riding the fantastic floats. Yelling for the beads were Farah and Hubert Oxford, Christine and Josh Crawford, Celia Crittenden, Ashley and Tab Bryan, Elaine Browne, John Johnson, Dawn and Gene Isabel, Roy West, Maite and Ben Broussard. Many more thousands gathered Saturday night to watch Grammy Award-winning star Nelly perform as the onlookers bared the cold wind and misty rain.

On Sunday, the fab Mardi Gras Jazz Brunch could be heard all around the Event Centre. Our town’s favorite, Jimmy Simmons, along with talented musicians Gary Weldon, Sharon Montgomery, Brennen Nace, Stephanie Johnson, Charlie Prause and Billy McQueen, kept the guests on their edge of their seats. Thrilled with the sensational sounds and delicious brunch by Rao’s Bakery and Café were Susan Simmons, Camille Mouton, Mary Ann Isles, Sally and Howard Nichols, Paige Windham, Debbie Bishop, Susan and Hsing-Wei Chu, Mary Perlitz, Linda and Tom Neild, Richard Cantu, Noel and Fred Turner, Gisela Houseman, Betsy and Earl Hines and Jo Vance, and too many more to mention Kudos to Laura Childress, Emily Wheeler and all the hard-working committees for organizing this huge event for our amazing community to enjoy! Next year’s Mardi Gras will be bigger and better! Save the date Feb. 16-19, 2023. See you downtown!
