It’s rodeo time as the El Mina Shriners will host “Saddling Up for Shriners Rodeo” on Nov. 10-12 at the Chambers County Arena at 410 Lilton Sonnier Ave. in Winnie. Tickets can be purchased online at Eventbrite.com or at the venue, day of rodeo. Prices are $5-$10.

Events include bull riding, ladies breakaway roping, calf scramble, bronc busting, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing.

The Shriner’s official philanthropy is Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 hospitals changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Their hospitals provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate.

Lamar Cardinals

The LU football team rolled up 344 yards of offense, and the defense recorded an early pick six as the Cardinals went on to defeat Nicholls, 24-17, on Oct. 29 at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The victory – LU’s first of the season – put an end to a 15-game slide dating back to September 2021.

Of the Cardinals’ 344 yards of offense, 267 came on the ground as sophomore Khalan Griffin recorded his second consecutive 100-yard effort. Griffin ended the game with 17 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Big Red’s defense – which held Nicholls to 365 yards – was led by two players in double figures. Freshman linebacker Tyler Jackson led the team with 16 tackles, while sophomore Caleb Arnold added 13. Freshman Aaron King ended the night with two tackles, two pass breakups and arguably the biggest play of the game when he picked off a pass and returned 55 yards for a score.

LU will look to make it two in a row Saturday, Nov. 5, when they host Southeastern Louisiana (5-3, 2-1) at 3 p.m. It will be the final home game of the season. The Cards have lost the last four games to SLU.

Other than bad weather on Friday canceling the opening day of action in the Sam Houston Invitational, LU’s women’s tennis team had a great outing to close out 2022 fall schedule. The Cardinals placed three of four doubles teams in flight finals with two teams coming away with titles to go along with a singles championship and two singles back draw titles.

The duo of Megan Do and Margarita Nikonorova won the Flight E title, while the team of Ana Jolic and Jayci Wong picked up the title in Flight D.

For Jolic, her doubles title was one of two on the day as she also picked up the final victory in Flight B.

The team will now turn their attention to the spring season, which begins Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, as they host DuPaul at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

Following Wednesday’s exhibition contest, the men’s basketball team will open regular season play Monday, Nov. 7, against St. Thomas at 7 p.m.

The women’s basketball team will host East Texas Baptist in an exhibition game Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. The regular season is scheduled to start Monday, Nov. 7, when the Cards travel to Waco to play No. 18 Baylor at 7 p.m.
