The LC-M Lady Bears volleyball team won the YMBL Tournament Red Bracket division last weekend by defeating Splendora (2-0), Port Arthur Memorial (2-0), Silsbee (2-0), Hamshire-Fannett (2-1), Hardin-Jefferson (2-0) and Bridge City (2-0).

Chrissy Joseph was named MVP while teammates Lexi Tubbleville, Ava White and Mariah Ammons earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Lamar Cardinals

While LU’s women’s soccer team might’ve only scored one goal last week, they still went undefeated with a win and a tie as their defense kept the opposition off the scoreboard. Anchoring the defense was Nicole Panis, who earned the Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week award.

From Opmeer, Netherlands, Panis had two shutouts for the Cardinals against South Alabama and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Against then undefeated USA Jaguars, she faced 11 shots and finished with five saves as she helped LU to a 0-0 draw. Although she only made two saves against AM-CC thanks to the Cardinals’ defense, one of those saves was in the 70th minute when Big Red was clinging to a 1-0 lead, which they would hold on to for the win.
This marks her third career weekly honor and second in the SLC this season.
LU is off to their best start in program history with a 4-0-1 record. Panis currently leads the conference in goals against average (.411), save percentage (.923), and shutouts (three) while her 4.80 saves per game is second. She and the Cardinals will be traveling to Natchitoches, Louisiana for their next conference meeting with Northwestern State this Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m.

The Cards’ next home game will be Sunday, Sept. 18, against Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m.

Transfer Chris Esqueda has already made a significant impact with the football team being named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 12. The sophomore transfer from Baylor was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goals Saturday at SMU and finished the game with 10 points. Two of his three field goals came from a distance greater that 40 yards. By the end of the contest, he had hit on attempts of 42, 38 and 46 yards.
The football team (0-2) will play their first home game of the season Saturday, Sept. 17, against Northern Colorado at 6 p.m. LU defeated Northern Colorado last year by the overtime score of 17-10.

The volleyball Cards (4-3) picked up two wins last weekend defeating Southern (3-2) and Texas Southern (3-0). They will next compete in the UTA Invitational in Arlington on Sept. 16-17 and play Prairie View A&M, New Orleans and host UT Arlington.
