After leading Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) on a chase in a Volkswagen Beetle, a 25-year-old Magnolia Springs man allegedly attacked a deputy before they were able to arrest him.

On the night of Friday, Nov. 11, a JCSO deputy attempted a traffic stop on a Volkswagen Beetle, driven by Kenneth Woods, for traffic violations.

The vehicle slowed down at the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 and FM 1005 in Jasper, and a male passenger exited the vehicle with his hands up and the vehicle continued to evade onto Hwy 96, but was disabled a short distance later.

A white man, identified as Woods, exited the driver side and fled on foot into a wooded area. The deputy pursued the suspect into the wooded area and gave commands for the man to show his hands and surrender.

At this time the suspect charged the deputy and attacked him, at one point choking him. After a physical altercation, the deputy was able to gain control of the suspect and place him in custody. After the arrest, officers found that the bug driver was also in possession of drugs, namely methamphetamine.

Deputies arrested Woods, a 25-year-old white man from Magnolia Springs, on outstanding warrants for failure to appear and felony probation violations.

“He is held without bond on those charges,” JCSO reported. “He has further been charged with assault on a peace officer, a second-degree felony, evading arrest/detention with a vehicle, a third-degree felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony.

Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Brett Holloway set bonds totaling $250,000.
