After nearly a year on the run, convicted murderer Matthew Edgar has been captured.

The Sabine County Sheriff’s Office reported around 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, in Hemphill, the U.S. Marshal’s Service arrested Matthew Edgar, 26.

In January 2022, Edgar was convicted of the October 2020 murder of his girlfriend, 19-year-old Livye Lewis.

Edgar, who was out of jail a $50,000 bond, skipped out on the third day of trial and was last seen leaving the Sabine County Courthouse in Hemphill; he has been missing ever since. A jury sentenced Edgar to 99 years in prison in his absence, a Hardin County judge officially handing down the sentence in person as Edgar appeared in cuffs on Jan. 3.

In August, Edgar had been added to the list of the 10 most wanted fugitives by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
