Nutrition and Services for Seniors held its 13th annual Deliver the Difference Luncheon, which benefits Meals on Wheels, on May 2 honoring Cindy and Michael Lindsay in addition to numerous local volunteers and donors.

Nutrition and Services for Seniors is a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 focused on offering programs designed to help older adults live fulfilling lives with autonomy and respect. Through services such as home-delivered meals, transportation, nutrition education and information resources, the organization empowers seniors to live independently in their own homes in both Jefferson and Hardin counties.

The Lindsays’ commitment to supporting Nutrition and Services for Seniors has made a significant impact for years in Jefferson and Hardin Counties, the agency’s supporters shared. This couple joins the ranks of esteemed past honorees, including 2023 honorees Sherrie and The Honorable Jeff Branick, as well as Elaine Shellenberger, among others.

Mike Lindsay works as a local attorney at Lindsay, Lindsay & Parsons, while Cindy Lindsay is the director of marketing and public relations for Coastal Welding.

John and Laurie Mathews were selected as this year’s Deliver the Difference Honorary Chairs. Both work as wealth management advisors at Merrill Lynch and are passionate about giving back to the community. The Mathewses join 2023 Honorary Chairs Susan and Dr. Wayne Margolis, along with over a dozen other dedicated local volunteers, who have made significant contributions over the years.

“These two couples have done so much, not only for the community but especially with our agency through donations and gifts of their time,” said Kimball. “They truly believe in the mission of what we do. I don’t know where our community would be without these two couples and that’s one thing that I love about our luncheon is getting to know the community members that are out there moving and shaking, large or small – they are making a difference.”

Nutrition and Services for seniors is a unique local nonprofit agency, as it does not consider income as a qualifier for services. Programs and initiatives offered include Meals on Wheels, transportation to life-sustaining medical appointments such as dialysis and rides to the grocery store, and congregate dining which offers 17 dining sites throughout the service area where seniors can dine with friends, play games and have access to other essential resources and educational materials. Additionally, services are also available for homebound clients including AniMeals, which provides pet food for those who cannot afford it, the Grow to Share Garden, Grocery Bag Program and Shelf Stable Meals.

The organization relies heavily on local donations and volunteers. The most urgent need is for volunteers to deliver meals to clients at lunchtime Monday through Friday. This opportunity to serve is also flexible in schedule and location to allow anyone who is interested in volunteering to do so. Additional volunteer opportunities include helping with grocery bags, helping gather from the garden and many other fundraising opportunities.

“The reality is this problem is never going away – we will always need funds and always need volunteers. Community means everything to us. Our story will never have an ending, but we are here for the seniors and they will never be forgotten,” said Kimball.
