In 2020, nearly one in five crashes on Texas roads were caused by a distracted driver in which 367 people died and 2,205 were seriously injured, according to data reported be the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO).

"Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from driving," the report indicates. "Distractions can include anything from texting and talking on a mobile phone to eating and drinking, putting on makeup, shaving, reading, programming a navigation system, watching a video and even adjusting the radio.

"With our local schools beginning classes soon, we will have excited kiddo’s eager to get to school or get back home to share their day. In their excitement, they may not pay close attention to approaching vehicles. Parents are encouraged to walk their children through the steps of safely exiting a vehicle, walking across a parking lot and crossing a roadway. Let’s all work together to make our community safer!"
