While allegedly driving drunk on Interstate 10, a 30-year-old Beaumont resident struck a Beaumont Police Department (BPD) patrol unit and officer who had stopped to assist a man walking in the roadway at about 4 a.m. Feb. 18.

In the predawn hours of that Friday, a BPD patrol officer was traveling north in the 100 block of the I-10 north service road, after picking up a male that was walking in the middle of the roadway.

The officer had overhead red and blue emergency lights still activated when a 2015 blue Chrysler 200, driven by DeCarlos Frank, struck the patrol unit from behind. The officer sustained non life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital. The man being assisted by the officer reportedly refused any EMS treatment.

During the investigation, officers determined that Frank was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Frank was transported to Baptist Hospital, where he was medically cleared for jail. He was then transported to the Jefferson County Jail and booked in for driving while intoxicated.
