According to a weekly release from Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman, deputies responded to 299 calls for service between July 4 and 10.

Deputies responded to 46 calls in Evadale, 98 calls in Buna, 28 calls in Kirbyville, 62 calls in Jasper, 19 calls in Brookeland, 30 calls in Rayburn, 11 calls in Beech Grove, three calls in Boykin Springs and two calls out of county.

“We had several campsites broken into in the Peachtree Community,” Newman reported. “Camps at the Hog Creek Hunting Club and around the Hancock Cemetery were hit. The thieves even took the wire out of the walls!

“It’s a hassle to haul things back and forth, but it’s not wise to leave your valuables in the woods where there are no neighbors, and you seldom check on it. If you’re leaving your things, at least put up some cameras. Most of the property was recovered over the weekend in Sabine County, and one suspect is in jail.”

The sheriff further reported “a terrible boating accident on the lake,” where a man lost his life.

“Some of these boats now travel at a high rate of speed, we need to slow down and remember why we’re at the lake; to relax and enjoy our families!” he said.

Newman reported that his jail was holding 126 inmates as of July 13.
