Late port commissioner honored with bridge name

According to a post from Port of Beaumont President Georgine Guillory, port commissioners have voted to name the new Carroll Street Bridge in honor of the late Commissioner Lee Smith.

Smith, who had served on the port’s board of commissioners for years, was also the first Black president of the board. Smith passed away in October 2021 and widow, LaRue, was selected to fill her late husband’s unexpired term.

According to the Port of Beaumont, the Carroll Street Bridge/ Commissioner Lee Smith Bridge that was slated for completion with the coming of 2022 is anticipated to “improve port access and allow us to move cargo efficiently.”
