Lumberton ISD names lone finalist for superintendent

The Lumberton ISD Board of Trustees has named Dr. John Mathews as the lone finalist for superintendent. Current Superintendent, Dr. Tony Tipton, is retiring from public education after a 30-year career and a successful four-year stint as superintendent in LISD.

Dr. Mathews comes to Lumberton ISD with 28 years of educational experience. Over the last 11 years, Dr. Mathews served at Celina ISD in the roles of chief operations officer, assistant superintendent for Administrative Services, and middle school principal.

Throughout his years in education, Dr. Mathews has been a biology, chemistry, and math teacher, as well as assistant principal, principal, and coordinator of student services. He earned his PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of North Texas, two Master of Arts degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary in Biblical Studies and Christian Education, and his Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at Dallas in Biology.

He and Kelley, his wife of 27 years, have lived in the North Texas area where they have raised their four children.

Dr. Mathews will begin his tenure as superintendent after a mandatory 21-day waiting period.
