Just after 6:30 a.m. May 6, a Beaumont police officer was flagged down by a 73-year-old-man who had just been robbed at Calder and 10th streets, according to a news release.
The victim stated that a black male, later identified as 46-year-old Howard Lee Mitchell, had robbed him of his bicycle and gave the officer a detailed description. Around that time, police received a call from a witness who followed the suspect. Officers were able to locate the suspect, with the victim's bike, in the area of Angelina and Pecos streets.
After speaking with detectives, Mitchell was transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility and charged with aggravated robbery. The charge was enhanced to aggravated robbery due to the victim's age, according to the release.
