The McFaddin-Ward House invites the community to enjoy live entertainment on its beautiful grounds at Music in the Gardens – “Jazz & Juleps featuring Jimmy Simmons Friends,” a free outdoor music event, on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and snacks as they gather on the historic home’s lawn at 1906 McFaddin Ave. for an evening of great tunes and community fellowship. Gates open at 6 p.m. Tours of the first floor of the home will be provided from 6 -7:30 p.m.

“The McFaddin-Ward House gardens provide a relaxing atmosphere to experience both natural splendor and great entertainment, and guests may join the spirit of the festive jazz concert by mixing and bringing a mint julep to enjoy,” Tony Chauveaux, McFaddin-Ward House executive director, said. “Jimmy Simmons is an exceptional musician and well-loved community figure with a great group of musicians that are sure to provide an unforgettable evening for jazz fans of all ages.”

A recipe for classic mint julep requires 1.3 ounces bourbon, .75 ounces simple syrup or a teaspoon sugar and four mint leaves and a sprig of mint.

Prepare some very cold, very dry crushed ice with chunks of ice. “Bruise” or mash the mint leaves in the bottom of a julep cup with sugar syrup. Add ice to the three-quarter mark and half of the bourbon. Stir to chill the julep cup. Top off with more powdered ice and the remaining bourbon and continue to stir until the outside of the cup begins to freeze. Garnish with the mint sprig and set aside to rest while the julep cup freezes over on the outside.

All events are free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, Music in the Gardens will be canceled. For more information, visit mcfaddin-ward.org or call (409) 832-2134.
