Students at Sallie Curtis Elementary had the opportunity to visit with law enforcement officials and see a helicopter fly over and land at the campus on Oct. 12 for the campus’ Career and Technical Education. Principal Cheryl Tripplett asked the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to give the Sallie Curtis Elementary kindergarten, first grade and academics for life students an up-close look at their helicopter during the Fire Safety Event, and offered all grade levels the chance to see the equipment, as well.

“The Fire Safety and Law Enforcement program is part of the National Night Out Campaign,” said Counselor Kathryn Finch. “It was developed to enhance the relationship between community members and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of partnership.”

Students watched the helicopter land and, after the engine and propellers were turned off, grade levels rotated taking turns for class pictures with the pilot. A fire truck and SWAT tank were also on campus.

“The helicopter was really cool,” said first-grader Samuel Landry.
