The Sour Lake Lions recognized Ronnie and Lou Ann Johnson as recipients of the Melvin Jones Award on Sept. 13. Lions Clubs worldwide recognize outstanding individuals by bestowing on them an award that is named after its founder Melvin Jones. This award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism.

Johnson joined the Lions in 1987, and during his 35 years as a member, introduced many new members into the Lions’ world of service. His wife joined in 1990 and is recognized as the first woman admitted to the club.

The couple has helped with club
hunger initiatives, vision screening and eyeglass sharing, contributions of school supplies, collection of clothes, socks and underwear, support for victims of cancer and other diseases, and assistance for those impacted by natural disasters. They have promoted community events and actively helped with Old Timers Day, Christmas in the Park, Lighted Christmas Parades, Trunk or Treat, White Cane Day, Easter egg hunts, July 4th celebrations, and the placing of flags on patriotic holidays.

Both have played numerous leadership roles, serving as president and in other offices and committee positions at both the local and district levels.
