Despite fewer cars on Texas roads in 2020 due to the pandemic, traffic deaths actually rose, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) including victims who failed to use a seatbelt.

In 2020, there were 12 motor vehicle traffic crashes in Beaumont in which unrestrained occupants sustained fatal or serious injuries. These crashes resulted in four fatalities and nine serious injuries.

In 2020, wearing a seat belt could have saved more than 2,700 people from death or serious injury in crashes on Texas roads. Even in the midst of a pandemic and with fewer traffic crashes in Texas, the number of deaths of unbuckled motorists still rose by 16% last year as compared to 2019. TxDOT’s annual Click It or Ticket campaign reminds every one of the safety benefits of wearing a seat belt. Texas law enforcement officers will step up their efforts from May 24 to June 6 to ticket unbelted drivers and passengers.

The Click It or Ticket campaign is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel such as wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. November 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways.
