After being named district champions, the current issues and social studies West Brook High School UIL teams went on to win the Best of Texas 6A State Team Competition, according to a news release from the Beaumont Independent School District (BISD). Junior Sam Marchand won first place in current issues and social studies.

“Trying to meet with kids and practice via Zooms and online made for a very uncertain season. However, our kids were amazing and dominated at the district competition,” said Candice LeMasters, West Brook UIL coach. “They did well at the regional competition as well, although it was very tough competing against schools that had been meeting face-to-face all year.”

Two students advanced to the state-level competition. Marchand placed ninth in social studies and senior Kent Liu was an alternate for number sense. Other campus contributors include UIL Coordinator Jenny Nguyen, Ready Writing and Literary Criticism Coach Megan Ryan and Science Coach Dan Van Pelt.

“All of the coaches and I are proud of what the students accomplished during this very difficult UIL year,” said LeMasters. “All but one of our competitors are returning for next year, so we are excited and already planning for a great 2021-22 season.”

LeMasters celebrated the team with certificates, recognitions and a casual dinner.
