Beaumont 18-year-old Charles James Mishaw, III, has been charged with federal firearms and carjacking violations stemming from a Jan. 11 indictment where he is alleged to have taken a senior citizen's car under gunpoint. He will appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Zachary J. Hawthorn on Jan. 30 for arraignment.

Six years ago, streets in Port Arthur weren’t much different than what you might find at your local race track – people driving fast with little to no regard for the law. Now, with the advent of the Traffic Unit in 2006, last year’s traffic accidents were 200 fewer than in years’ past and the number of traffic fatalities last year – five- is the lowest number in decades.

Officers from the Beaumont Police Department responded to the 1700 block of Wall Street on Friday morning, Jan. 20, on reports that a victim was shot in the area.

Patrol Division Officers arrived to the location to find a 49-year-old Hispanic male victim suffering from a superficial gunshot wound to the left side of his neck. Officers summoned Beaumont EMS, who responded and transported the victim to St. Elizabeth Hospital. The victim was ultimately treated and released from the emergency room.

Carrol Thomas has served at the helm of the Beaumont Independent School District for the past 16 years but this next year will be his last, as he announced just after 10 p.m. Wednesday that he is retiring at the end of the first semester of the 2012 school year.
