U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced Thursday, March 3, the indictment of two federal inmates charged with killing another inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Beaumont.

Christopher Cramer, 33, of Ogden, Utah, and Ricky Fackrell, 32, of Vernal, Utah, were named in the two-count indictment charging them with murder and conspiracy to commit murder returned by a federal grand jury Thursday, a news release from Bales’ office confirmed.

A 24-year-old Mexico native was sentenced to prison in Jefferson County on Feb. 29 for the murder of 25-year-old Port Arthur resident Denzel Washington. Jose Julio Esquivel was sentenced to 40 years for Washington’s murder, 20 years for a separate aggravated assault and 20 years for burglary of a habitation, all to run concurrently.

A woman crossing the street in her power wheelchair was critically injured March 3 after being struck by a vehicle near Central Mall in Port Arthur.

Police in Beaumont have released the identity of a woman found dead on the train tracks March 2.

The Beaumont Police Department reports officers responded to Broadway at First Street in reference to a deceased person at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night. When police arrived, they discovered a black female deceased on the railroad tracks. It was apparent to officers that the woman had been run over by a train. Investigators reportedly found no evidence of foul play.

The victim has been identified as Bertha Thomas, a 47-year-old Beaumont woman.
