With heavy hearts, much of Beaumont’s fire, EMS and police community gathered Sept. 11, 2012, to commemorate those first responders who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Members of the Coast Guard, West Brook ROTC and veterans groups donned their military uniforms, making the scene at Fire Station No. 1 at 767 College in Beaumont a professional and somber remembrance.

A huge and flowing American flag was saluted while at half mast as a Navy bugler played taps, causing some to become visibly emotional.

The Jefferson County Commissioners Court approved a $250,000 contribution from the county to a “minimum revenue guarantee” (MRG) to American Airlines for a new American Eagle route between Jack Brooks Regional Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

A scam targeting seniors and persons receiving disability benefits made its way through Jefferson County the past few months, with residents of Port Arthur impacted at a significant rate. Those perpetrating the scam duped victims by promising them access to a federal stimulus check, allegedly administered to all Social Security recipients, even though no such provision exists. Victims supplied the scammers with copies of their driver’s license, Social Security number, and banking information.

Lamar University will host the seventh annual Constitution Day event Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Lamar Institute of Technology Multi-Purpose Center. This year’s event will feature speaker J. Lee Thompson, professor of history, at Lamar University. Thompson will discuss how British documents played a role in shaping the American Constitution in his lecture, “The British Roots of the American Constitution.” The lecture is free and open to the community.
