The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a call late on Sunday, Sept. 16, indicating there was a large snake near the roadway on Highway 365 by the entrance to Gator Country. Upon arrival, deputies and owner of Gator Country, Gary Saurage, identified the snake as Banana, the 16-foot albino Burmese python reported missing April 30, 2012. Gary Saurage said, “She appears to be in good condition.” He’s glad to have her back, he added.

Beaumont Independent School District officials announced the opening of a new Adult Cosmetology class next month dependent upon enrollment participation. The announcement followed two days of community outcry after Thomas Amons, Taylor Career and Technology Center principal, closed the district’s long-standing night-class program this week.

Local musician and band member of The Kingdom Mafia, James Phelps, 29, was assaulted Saturday on Crockett Street in Beaumont, police said. A friend of Phelps took him to his father’s house that night, according to Beaumont Police Department Officer Carol Riley.  Phelps was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth’s Hospital the following morning and has remained in ICU for treatment of his injuries.

The United Way held a campaign kickoff luncheon Thursday, Sept. 13, to begin this year’s fundraising efforts.  Those who attended the kickoff were treated to a big, rich gumbo from Big Rich Courville’s Catering’s.

Nederland Police are asking for the community’s help in solving the Sept. 11, 2012, burglary of Hillcrest Elementary School.

During the early morning hours of Sept. 11, a burglar entered Hillcrest Elementary at 2611 Ave. H in Nederland. Once inside the building, the burglar entered several locked classrooms and removed a Nikon Coolpix camera, an undetermined amount of money and food items.
