LU junior quarterback Robert Coleman was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week after he led the Cardinals to a 21-19 league victory at Houston Christian University on Sept. 30.

A native of Menifee, California, Coleman completed 63% of his passes and connected with seven different receivers for 294 yards and two touchdowns, all of which were career highs.

The victory – LU’s second consecutive – marked the program’s first backto-back wins since the 2019 season and serves as the first time the Cardinals have opened Southland Conference play 1-0 since the 2015 season. It was also the team’s first conference road in three years.

Lamar (2-3, 1-0) will host Northwestern State (0-4) on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m., which will be broadcast over the airwaves on KLVI 560 AM with Harold Mann. NSU leads the all-time series, 9-13-1, and defeated the Cards last season, 35-27.

Over the last three weeks, soccer standout Hollie Massey has been on a scoring spree. Last week, the graduatestudent from Cheshire, England elevated her play to earn the SLC Offensive Player of the Week.

Massey tallied six points (two goals and two assists) while leading LU to two more wins, which increased the team’s winning streak to eight games. Against Nicholls, she had five second half points that included two goals in 17 seconds in a 5-1 victory. In the last four games, Massey has tallied 10 points (two goals, six assists).

The soccer Cards (9-2-1, 4-0) will host Northwestern State (4-7, 2-2) on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. then travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana on Sunday, Oct. 8, to play rival McNeese (6-4-2, 3-0-1) at 1 p.m.

Lamar women’s cross country team is off to a successful start having already secured three Top-10 finishes including one first place victory. Last week, they were able to place seventh at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas and a big reason why is junior Nia Clatworthy of Porthcrawl, Wales, who was the team’s top 5K runner in the event with a personal-best time of 17.20.2. After one mile, Clatworthy was in 22nd place, but was able to move up 11 spots and secure 11th place. The time helped Clatworthy receive her first ever Southland Conference Weekly Runner Award.

LU will next compete Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas.

A short-handed volleyball squad struggled to find its rhythm Sept. 30 and New Orleans took full advantage posting a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-23) victory at McDonald Gym in Beaumont. The loss was the 16th straight. The Cardinals were led by 11 kills from Lyric Jordan.

The Cardinals (0-16, 0-5) hope to get their first win of the season Thursday, Oct. 5, when they travel east to play McNeese (6-12, 4-1) at 6:30 p.m.
