With a minute to go, the Cardinals were facing the prospect of a 1-1 tie to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi after Northwestern State defeated UIW to draw within two points of them in the Southland Conference standings. But then, a long range shot from Arely Alaniz put all doubt to rest as Lamar clinched the regular season Southland Conference title with a 2-1 win over the Islanders on Oct. 23 to improve to 12-1-2 overall and 9-1-1 in league play.

This marks the third ever conference title for the Cardinals after winning it in 2017 and 2019. In both seasons, LU then went on to win the conference tournament and reach the NCAA tournament. LU got off to their best start in program history this year going 9-0-1, which bested the record from the 2020 team that went 8-1 to open their season.

The Cards will play their final home regular season game Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. against Nicholls and will honor seven seniors for their outstanding careers at LU.

The SLC Tournament will be held Nov. 2-6 in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The LU football team dropped their seventh game in a row Oct. 22 losing 54-21 to Prairie View A&M at Provost Umphrey Stadium in Beaumont to fall to 0-7 overall.

Lamar ended the game with 430 yards of total offense, including 358 on the ground. Unfortunately, PVAMU was just as effective carrying the ball 44 times for 404 yards (580 yards of total offense).

Transfer Khalan Griffin led the Cardinals ground attack with 114 yards rushing (and one touchdown), and was one of three Cardinals to rush for a score on the night.

LU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Nicholls (2-6) at 3 p.m. in Beaumont. The all-time series with the Colonels is tied at 6 wins each, but Nicholls has won the last five matchups.

After guiding the program to its best season since 2013, head baseball coach Will Davis has received a three-year contract extension that will run through the 2025 season announced LU Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley.

The 2021 season saw the Cards record it first winning season and advance to the Southland Conference Championships for the first time since 2017. Davis and the team followed that up by recording 37 wins the following year and just miss a WAC Division title by a single game. The 2022 campaign marked the most wins and the first conference tournament victory by a Cardinal squad since 2013.
